George Edward Clyde, Sr. passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018, in a local hospital at the age of 79.
George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Walters Clyde; two children, Cathy Clyde Patton and husband Andrew, George Edward Clyde, Jr. and wife Jennifer, all of Sulphur; seven grandchildren, Brody Patton, Hunter Patton, Madeline Patton, Jack Clyde, Emily Clyde, Elizabeth Clyde and Eloise Clyde; his brother, Joey Clyde and wife Susan; his sister, Suellyn Hudson and husband Rich; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph Clyde and Velma Clyde, and a host of friends.
George was born in Alexandria in 1938. He graduated from Bolton High School in 1956 and Louisiana Tech University in 1962 with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Math Education.
Upon graduation, George and Helen moved to Sulphur. He worked for the Calcasieu Parish School Board as a teacher, principal and school administrator for 35 years. After retiring, George worked for the City of Sulphur for 10 years, five years as the Director of Finance.
He was an active member of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church for 55 years. He was a past Chairman of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools which covers a 12-state region in the southern U.S. He was a member of the West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital Foundation board since 1999. George enjoyed working outdoors, church related activities and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. His memorial service will be held on Monday, April 9, at 11 a.m. at Henning Memorial United Methodist Church in Sulphur.
Visitation will be Sunday evening, April 8, in the church from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will continue on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until service time. Rev. Ellen Alston and Rev. Austin Rinehart will officiate. His inurnment will follow the service in the church columbarium in the Prayer Garden. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.
