Sulphur residents who live inside the city limits may qualify for free property clean up. On Monday, Aug. 9, the Private Property Debris Removal Intake Center opens at 9:30 a.m. for property owners to visit and apply. Applications are only being taken for residential properties, not commercial.

The place to go is the temporary office trailer behind the old Kroger building located at 1551 East Napoleon St.

“If your property has disaster-generated debris such as trees, stumps, vegetation, construction, hanging dead limbs or demolition materials that you cannot remove and that debris poses a threat to public health and safety, you may qualify for this program,” said Kristen Covey, a TetraTech employee handing intake for the city of Sulphur. “It won’t cost you a thing.”

Clean up could also include demolition of residential properties with catastrophic structural damage.

“Right now we’re just doing intake,” Covey said. “We’re not certain when work will begin on these properties or how long we’ll be doing intake.”

Residents should probably act fast, as funding for the program is provided by FEMA and a cap has been determined. To apply, bring the legal document that proves property ownership, proof of loss for insurance (for those who are insured) and a valid picture ID such as Louisiana Driver’s License. Applicants will be asked to give a brief description of the scope of the job and sign a “Right of Way” document.

“We’ll go and actually survey the property, take photographs and submit those to FEMA,” Covey said. “I have seen some really torn-up properties in the area, so I know this is something people here need. It will take time to get out to these properties and do the work, but it’s at no cost to the property owner.”

For any questions regarding the application please email CityofSulphurPPDR@Tetratech . com or call 337-258-5168.

Those who need help and live in Calcasieu Parish but outside the Sulphur city limits should call 337-230-2627 for details about a similar program.
