Strength training course offered for children

Dynamic Dimensions Fitness Center in Sulphur, located at 545 Cypress St., will hold an athletic prep course for children during the upcoming holiday break.
“This is a performance-based, four-day course for girls and boys ages 8-13,” said Shelby Hodges, CSCS, exercise specialist at DDF. “This is really an underserved group, going into middle school or high school.”
Young athletes will learn proper strength, speed and agility techniques to maximize performance and resiliency.
Shelby has coached athletes from youth to college and pro levels in various sports, but plans to make this course exactly what’s needed for this age group at this time in their lives. He said he will dispel myths about strength training stunting growth, and said the course is mainly to arm young athletes with other useful information that will stay with them through adulthood.
“Fracturing a growth plate is more likely to happen playing a sport than when doing resistance training,” Hodges said. “We’ll learn about warming up, static stretching, recovery and other proper techniques for preventing injury, how to position the body for acceleration and various other athletic stances, all very practical things.”
To compete at a consistently high level, athletes must master the technical skills required by their sport. Most importantly, they must build and master their bodies. They do this through sound, scientifically backed and organized strength and conditioning, which is what this course will focus on,” explains Suzy Trahan, director of Dynamic Dimensions Fitness Centers of West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital.
“They’ll build confidence in themselves and learn to trust their bodies,” Hodges added.
The Athletic Prep course will be held daily starting Monday, Dec. 27, through Thursday, Dec. 30, 12:30-2 p.m. The price is $50/athlete. DDF will be holding a question-and-answer session about the athletic prep course on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 5:30 p.m. at its Sulphur location. Anyone who attends and registers during the session, will receive 10 percent off registration costs.
