The West Cal Chamber of Commerce honored Lisa Reed, Flock of Five owner, for customer service and spotlighted 4D Outfitters as Business of the Month at its monthly business luncheon on Thursday.
Sowela Technical Community College Chancellor Neil Aspinwall updated the group on the school’s rebounding student population.
“Unlike many of the institutions in Louisiana, and across the nation, we experienced 11 and one-quarter percent growth,” Aspinwall said.
According to Aspinwall, 66 percent of future jobs will not require a four-year degree. However, half of those jobs will require higher training beyond high school.
He said there is nothing wrong with a four-year degree.
“That’s how I make my living,” he said.
However, he would like to see a paradigm shift in thinking because students attend Sowela for the same reasons they attend a four-year degree program — to improve their lives, to gain skills, to be able to earn a better living and provide for their family.
For the fourth-straight year, Sowela was named the No. 1 community college in Louisiana according to WalletHub. Rankings are based on 19 key indicators, including quality, tuition and fees, student-faculty ratio and graduation rates.
Sowela does not participate in the student federal loan program because so many students leave school with large loans. It does participate in the federal assistance program.
The West Calcasieu Chamber of Commerce Chamber Fest, a part business expo, part festival, will be April 30 at Pinederosa Park in Westlake. The title sponsor is CSE Federal Credit Union. New this year is the Bob Hardey Golf Scramble at the National Golf Club of Louisiana.
