After Barbe ended Sulphur’s 13-game win streak, the Tors look to even the series and regain momentum with the state baseball playoffs fast approaching.

Barbe won 5-3 on Saturday for their ninth consecutive win over the Tors. The streak dates to 2018. The Tors’ last win over the Bucs was on March 22, 2018, a 1-0 shutout.

The Tors host the Bucs at 6 p.m. today at McMurry Park.

The Bucs’ (30-1, 12-1) win created a first-place tie with the Tors (25-3, 12-1) for the District 3-5A lead with three district games left.

“We are looking to turn things around on Tuesday and come away with a victory,” Sulphur head coach Sam Moore said. “We are going to give another great effort. Hopefully, this time we come out on top.”

The Tors’ defensive play has been with a .962 fielding percentage, but one error Saturday after Owen Galt’s bunt allowed the Bucs to take a 2-0 lead.

“The main thing is that we made a couple of mistakes that hurt us,” Moore said. “Against good teams like Barbe, they make you pay for your mistakes, and they made all the plays. That was the difference in the game.

“I thought the pitching matchup went well. I thought we pitched it well. I thought we had some good swings offensively. We did enough to win the game if we just eliminate a couple of mistakes. That is what we are working on. These are not the games that you can (make mistakes). There are going to be some, but you have to limit the amount of mistakes you make.”

The Tors had six hits, including two by Dillon Bird, who drove in a pair of runs in the sixth inning.

“We had a lot of good swings on a top-notch pitcher in Landon Victorian,” Moore said. “I thought we had some quality at-bats and the guys competed at the plate very well.

“That is something we can definitely carry over into the playoffs. It is always good to see good pitching before the playoffs because it prepares you for what you are going to see in the playoffs.”
